Boeing Space and Launch is the space systems division of The Boeing Company, operating within Boeing Defense, Space & Security. The division develops and manufactures satellites, spacecraft, and launch systems for government and commercial customers. Its portfolio spans military communications satellites, human spaceflight capsules, scientific spacecraft, and participation in the United Launch Alliance joint venture with Lockheed Martin.

CST-100 Starliner

Status: Completed three test flights (2019, 2022, 2024) with significant technical issues including software errors, propulsion failures, and helium leaks. The crewed test flight in 2024 resulted in astronauts remaining on ISS while the capsule returned uncrewed. NASA certification status uncertain as of mid-2026.
MUOS (Mobile User Objective System)
Narrowband military communications satellites providing secure UHF communications for U.S. and allied forces. Boeing was selected by U.S. Space Force for MUOS Service Life Extension (SLE) program in 2025, contracted to deliver two satellites to extend the constellation's operational life through the 2030s.
702 Satellite Bus
Geostationary communications satellite platform used for commercial and government missions. Power: Up to 25 kW. Lifetime: 15+ years. Heritage includes dozens of operational satellites for telecommunications, broadcasting, and military communications.
Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS)
High-capacity military communications satellites serving U.S. Department of Defense and international partners. Provides X- and Ka-band communications with coverage spanning continents and oceans.
Quantum Communications Satellite
Experimental satellite demonstrating quantum entanglement for secure space communications. Initial tests planned for 2026 with potential follow-on constellation to test entanglement swapping between satellites.

Boeing's space heritage originates from multiple aerospace pioneers. Rockwell International built the Space Shuttle orbiters and was acquired by Boeing in 1996, bringing decades of human spaceflight experience. McDonnell Douglas, merged with Boeing in 1997, contributed the Delta rocket family and satellite manufacturing capabilities.
