Overview

Maxar Technologies was a US space and geospatial-intelligence company formed in 2017 when Canada's MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) rebranded after acquiring Earth-imaging firm DigitalGlobe. The combined group also owned Space Systems Loral (satellite manufacturing, acquired by MDA in 2012), making Maxar one of the few companies spanning both spacecraft construction and high-resolution Earth observation. Its WorldView constellation supplied sub-half-meter imagery to the US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), allied governments, and commercial customers including Google, while its satellite-manufacturing arm built communications and Earth-observation spacecraft for government and commercial operators. Maxar's imagery gained global visibility during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, where its satellite pictures were widely used by media and intelligence agencies. In 2020 Maxar became a US-domiciled corporation, spinning off its Canadian MDA subsidiary. In January 2023, private equity firm Advent International agreed to acquire Maxar for $6.4 billion, a deal that closed in May 2023. Later that year Maxar reorganized into two internal business units — Maxar Intelligence and Maxar Space Systems — to separate its imagery/analytics business from its spacecraft-manufacturing business. In October 2025 the Maxar name was formally retired: Maxar Intelligence became Vantor and Maxar Space Systems became Lanteris Space Systems, ending the Maxar Technologies corporate identity. The company mattered to the industry as a key commercial supplier of national-security-grade satellite imagery and as a major US spacecraft manufacturer.
