Northrop Grumman Space Systems operates as a primary division of Northrop Grumman Corporation, specializing in spacecraft manufacturing, satellite systems, space sensors, and ground infrastructure. Headquartered at the historic Space Park facility in Redondo Beach, California—designated an Historic Aerospace Site in 2011—the division maintains over 5 million square feet of integration and test facilities including 300,000 square feet of high-bay space and 100,000 square feet of Class 10 clean rooms.
The division produces spacecraft buses for defense, intelligence, and civil applications, operates the Cygnus cargo spacecraft for ISS resupply under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services program, and develops advanced satellite servicing capabilities through its SpaceLogistics subsidiary. Northrop Grumman Space also builds solid rocket motors including boosters for NASA's Space Launch System and strategic missile systems.
Major programs include missile tracking satellite constellations for the U.S. Space Development Agency, classified reconnaissance satellites developed with partners including SpaceX, and on-orbit servicing vehicles that extend spacecraft lifetimes in geosynchronous orbit. The division participates in Voyager Space's commercial space station initiative and provides life-extension and refueling services for commercial satellite operators including Intelsat and Optus.

Cygnus Cargo Spacecraft
Pressurized cargo vehicle servicing the International Space Station under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract. The enhanced Cygnus XL variant delivers over 11,000 pounds (approximately 5,000 kg) of science experiments, crew supplies, and hardware per mission. First Cygnus flight: September 2013 (Orb-D1 demonstration). Launched aboard Antares rockets and, since 2024, SpaceX Falcon 9.
Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV)
On-orbit servicing spacecraft providing life extension for geosynchronous satellites. MEV-1 and MEV-2 are currently docked with Intelsat satellites, providing attitude control and orbit maintenance. Operated by SpaceLogistics, a Northrop Grumman subsidiary.
Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV)
Advanced servicing spacecraft equipped with robotic arms and dexterous manipulators developed under partnership with DARPA. Capable of installing Mission Extension Pods (jet packs) on client satellites in GEO. Contracted servicing missions include Intelsat and Optus spacecraft.
Solid Rocket Boosters
Designs and manufactures solid rocket motors including the five-segment boosters for NASA's Space Launch System. Developing the Booster Obsolescence and Life Extension (BOLE) upgrade expected to increase payload to lunar orbit by more than five metric tons, planned for Artemis 9 in the 2030s.
Missile Tracking Satellites
Builds satellites for the U.S. Space Development Agency's Tracking Layer constellation supporting missile warning and defense. Awarded contracts for 14 satellites as part of the 28-satellite Tranche 1 constellation commissioned in 2022.

Northrop Grumman Space traces lineage through multiple aerospace heritage companies including TRW Space & Electronics and Orbital Sciences Corporation (acquired 2018). Development of the Booster Obsolescence and Life Extension (BOLE) upgrade for SLS solid rocket boosters continues, with NASA planning adoption for Artemis 9 sometime in the 2030s after exhausting existing Shuttle-era hardware stocks.
