The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) has taken a significant step towards ensuring the continuity and enhancement of its Earth observation capabilities by awarding a $688-million contract to MDA Space. This contract marks the transition to the full build phase of a new synthetic aperture radar (SAR) replenishment satellite, a critical component designed to maintain Canada’s sovereign space-based surveillance and environmental monitoring capabilities.
This new satellite is set to integrate with the existing RADARSAT Constellation Mission in low-Earth orbit, which initially launched three satellites in 2019 as successors to the aging RADARSAT-2 system. The replenishment satellite will be vital in providing continuous SAR imagery that supports a wide range of applications, from maritime safety and Arctic surveillance to natural disaster response and environmental monitoring.
The initiative is part of the larger $1.012-billion RADARSAT+ portfolio introduced by the Canadian government in 2023, aimed at safeguarding domestic data independence. The importance of such systems has been underscored by the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and the Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, who emphasized the role of modern surveillance systems in detecting threats and protecting communities. “By reinforcing Canada’s sovereign satellite capabilities, we equip industry and the Canadian Armed Forces with the intelligence they need to protect communities, inform decisions, and keep Canada secure,” Joly stated.
MDA Space will utilize its fourth-generation CHORUS bus for the new satellite, with assembly, integration, and testing conducted at its Montreal facility. This effort builds upon a previous $44.7-million award to acquire long-lead components, ensuring that the project is well-prepared to meet its objectives. The financial details of this contract will be reflected in MDA Space’s corporate backlog for the second quarter of fiscal 2026.
