The U.S. Space Development Agency (SDA) has awarded substantial contracts to L3Harris Technologies and Sierra Space, amounting to approximately $1.75 billion, to build a new tranche of satellites designed to enhance the United States' capabilities in missile warning and missile defense. This move aims to bolster the country's defense architecture against evolving missile threats.

Under these contracts, L3Harris is set to receive $955 million, while Sierra Space will collect $798 million. The contracts are structured as fixed price Other Transaction Authority (OTA) rapid prototyping agreements, reflecting the urgency and strategic significance of the project. The goal is to have 36 satellites, collectively known as the Accelerated Missile Defense Tranche 3 (AMDT3), ready for deployment by the end of 2028.

L3Harris and Sierra Space are tasked with developing 18 satellites each, across two separate orbital planes. L3Harris will focus on creating space vehicles equipped with Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS)-like technology. These sensors are anticipated to play a crucial role in detecting and tracking hypersonic and ballistic missile threats. Meanwhile, Sierra Space will manufacture missile warning and missile tracking satellites, which are essential for providing early detection and tracking capabilities.

The SDA's Tranche 3 initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the U.S. missile defense infrastructure by expanding the capabilities of its Tracking Layer within the Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). This expansion is designed to improve the coverage and accuracy of missile detection systems, offering persistent global surveillance and tracking capabilities.

The newly awarded contracts contribute to the Trump administration's Golden Dome initiative, which envisions a robust, space-based missile defense network. The satellites produced under these contracts will be compatible with existing and future Tracking Layer satellites from Tranches 1, 2, and 3, ensuring seamless operation through a common ground system.

Gurpartap "GP" Sandhoo, the Space Force's Portfolio Acquisition Executive for Missile Warning and Tracking, emphasized the importance of accelerating the deployment of these satellites to strengthen the defense of the homeland and support U.S. forces and allies globally. He noted that the deployment of these satellites would enhance the ability to detect, identify, and track advanced missile threats.

L3Harris has been a consistent participant in SDA's Tracking Layer projects, having delivered satellites for Tranches 0, 1, and 2, while Sierra Space joined the project as a prime contractor in Tranche 2. Both companies are leveraging their expertise in satellite manufacturing to meet the stringent requirements set forth by the SDA.

The proliferation of low Earth orbit satellites for missile defense purposes is a critical component of the U.S. Department of Defense's strategy to mitigate the risks posed by advanced missile systems developed by potential adversaries.
