This funding round, led by Kleiner Perkins and ICONIQ, includes participation from prominent investors such as CapitalG, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Altimeter, Spark Capital, Sands Capital, ARK Invest, and T. Rowe Price Associates. The company's total capital raised now exceeds $1 billion, and it has secured over $1 billion in commercial and government contracts, marking a significant milestone in its rapid ascent since its founding in 2022.
Central to K2 Space's strategy is its contrarian approach to building larger and more powerful satellites. While many satellite manufacturers have focused on miniaturization to cope with historical launch constraints, K2 Space is betting on the increasing affordability of launches and the availability of larger rockets to support its vision. The company aims to produce up to 100 large satellites annually at its Torrance, California facility, catering to the growing demand for high-power systems in various orbits.

K2 Space's first satellite, the Gravitas, was launched in March aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, demonstrating the company's capability to operate high-power satellites in orbit. This milestone is part of the company's broader ambition to validate its satellite platform across multiple orbits through the upcoming Trinity mission, slated for the second quarter of 2027. This mission will test the versatility and reliability of K2 Space's platform in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO).
Co-founders Karan and Neel Kunjur's vision for K2 Space includes the development of even more powerful satellite platforms. Their Mega-class satellite, already capable of carrying payloads up to 3,000 kilograms and generating tens of kilowatts of power, is set to be followed by a Giga-class platform. Scheduled for introduction in the second half of 2028, this new class aims to deliver around 100 kilowatts of power, accommodating much larger payloads and potentially enabling space-based data centers.
The rapid valuation increase, from $3 billion in December following a $250 million Series C round to the current $6.8 billion, reflects investor confidence in K2 Space's business model and strategic direction.
