In a move poised to reshape the direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communications landscape, Lynk Global and Omnispace have merged to form Elveo Mobile. Announced on August 17, 2026, this merger aims to enhance the capacity and reach of satellite services directly accessible by standard smartphones. The newly formed entity, Elveo Mobile, is set to challenge established players like SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile, promising to expand beyond the realm of basic messaging services.

The creation of Elveo Mobile is a strategic amalgamation of Omnispace’s 60 megahertz of S-band spectrum and Lynk’s existing D2D platform. Historically, Lynk's services have been limited to intermittent messaging and alert systems delivered via a modest constellation of seven small satellites, primarily serving a few island nations. This merger represents a significant technological leap, as the integrated spectrum is intended to support bandwidth-intensive applications, a necessary evolution in the face of increasing competition from industry giants.

Omnispace initially harbored ambitious plans to leverage its spectrum for a vast D2D network comprising over 600 satellites. However, these plans faced setbacks, notably due to interference issues with SpaceX's Starlink Mobile service in the United States, which utilizes cellular frequencies from T-Mobile. Lynk's operations have similarly depended on partnerships with mobile network operators (MNOs) and cellular frequencies. The merger and the acquisition of dedicated satellite spectrum are anticipated to mitigate these limitations, enabling more sophisticated data services.

SpaceX has already made significant strides with its Starlink Mobile service, which has expanded into voice, video, and data services through a fleet of over 650 D2D satellites. Moreover, SpaceX plans to launch next-generation satellites next year, aiming to offer 5G-like speeds from space. This sets a high benchmark for Elveo Mobile as it enters the competitive arena.

Elveo Mobile's CEO, Ramu Potarazu, highlighted the company's strategic direction, noting imminent announcements of strategic partnerships and investments. Elveo has already secured “contractual agreements” with over 50 MNOs across more than 60 countries, signaling a robust foundation for its global service expansion. Notably, Luxembourg-based SES, a multi-orbit operator, has been a pivotal investor in both Lynk and Omnispace prior to their merger and continues to hold a significant stake in Elveo Mobile. SES's recent deployment of pathfinder satellites to test next-generation MEO technology, including an in-orbit relay capability, is expected to play a crucial role in supporting Elveo’s global, continuous D2D services targeted for 2027.
