MaiaSpace Signs Asia-Pacific Launch Deal with Japan’s iQPS for SAR Constellation
MaiaSpace announced on Sept. 9, 2026, that it has been selected by the Institute for Q-shu Pioneers of Space (iQPS) to provide launch services for a series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites beginning in 2029. The agreement is MaiaSpace’s first long-term customer deal in the Asia-Pacific region and covers launches to support iQPS’s QPS-SAR constellation.
iQPS is developing and operating the QPS-SAR constellation of small SAR satellites designed to provide high-resolution imagery in all weather conditions, day and night. iQPS aims to offer what it calls a global “Near-Real-Time Data Provision Service” capable of observing designated target areas almost anywhere in the world at an average revisit interval of 10 minutes. To reach that revisit goal, iQPS plans to build a large-scale constellation of 24 satellites by May 2028 and to deploy additional satellites by 2030. The organisation’s most recent launch, in mid-August 2026, used Rocket Lab to deploy one satellite.
In the company statement announcing the contract, MaiaSpace CEO Yohann Leroy said the deal “reflects the competitiveness and versatility of Maia, whose reusable and expendable configurations, combined with the Colibri kick stage, can serve efficiently a wide range of missions – from single satellite launches to constellation deployment and replenishment, across multiple orbits.” Leroy added that this modularity supports MaiaSpace’s ambition “to become a leading global player in the LEO launch market, with a target of around 20 launches per year by the early 2030s.”
The Maia vehicle family has been progressing through validation steps. A recent upper-stage validation campaign was completed ahead of a planned orbital debut in the second half of 2027, and MaiaSpace has been building commercial partnerships to broaden its mission offerings. Among those steps, MaiaSpace added a capability to carry secondary payloads through a commercial agreement with RIDE!, intended to enable compatible rideshare opportunities on Maia flights when mission requirements permit.
MaiaSpace offers both reusable and expendable launcher configurations and plans to use a Colibri kick stage to increase mission flexibility. That adaptability is a central factor cited by MaiaSpace and iQPS for the selection: it permits single-satellite insertions as well as phased deployments needed to build and replenish a constellation like QPS-SAR. The iQPS requirement for frequent revisits and global coverage implies launches into multiple orbital planes and a steady cadence of missions over several years.
iQPS’s QPS-SAR architecture emphasises high revisit frequency through fleet size rather than very large individual satellites. By aiming for an average 10-minute revisit to target areas, iQPS is committing to a high-launch tempo and tight operational scheduling. The plan to reach 24 satellites by May 2028 sets a near-term deployment target that will require sustained launch access and satellite production over 2027–2028.
For MaiaSpace, securing iQPS as a long-term Asia-Pacific customer represents a commercial milestone that complements its technical progress. The company has publicly stated a target of approximately 20 launches per year by the early 2030s, a rate that would place it among active small-launch providers if realized. The contract also highlights demand from Earth-observation operators for tailored launch solutions that can accommodate multiple insertion profiles and quick replenishment cycles.
From the customer side, iQPS has already started building operational experience: the mid-August 2026 Rocket Lab mission that deployed a QPS-SAR satellite demonstrates iQPS is pursuing a mixed procurement approach. Using multiple launch providers can reduce dependency on any single supplier and improve scheduling resilience—important considerations when a constellation’s utility depends on frequent revisits and near-real-time data delivery.
Looking ahead, MaiaSpace’s planned maiden orbital launch in the second half of 2027 will be closely watched by potential customers and competitors. If Maia’s reuse and expendable modes, plus the Colibri kick stage, perform as advertised, the company could be well-positioned to support constellation deployment and replenishment missions like those envisaged by iQPS. However, meeting a high cadence of constellation launches will require not only a reliable vehicle but also steady manufacturing, regulatory clearances, and launch range availability.
The iQPS–MaiaSpace agreement illustrates how the small-satellite SAR market is shaping launch demand: operators seeking rapid revisit capabilities are increasingly signing multi-launch deals with emerging launchers that offer flexibility in payload mass, orbit insertion, and cadence. For MaiaSpace, the deal is a concrete step into the Asia-Pacific market; for iQPS, it is part of an aggressive schedule to achieve a 24-satellite constellation by May 2028 and expanded capacity by 2030.
Both organisations will need to execute technical, industrial, and programmatic plans over the next three to four years to turn the announced ambitions into sustained operations and data services.
