Reusability

Designing a launch vehicle so that major hardware - usually the first stage - is recovered and flown again instead of being discarded on every mission.

Why it matters

Reusability is the single change that moved launch pricing in the last two decades, but not for the obvious reason. The saving is not just the hardware: it is that a recovered booster removes the need to build a new one, so a factory sized for a few vehicles a year can support dozens of flights. That is why reusability and launch cadence are the same conversation. The counter-argument is real too - refurbishment costs money, and a vehicle flown rarely may never amortise the performance it gives up to come home.

Where we use it
Not to be confused with

An expendable vehicle, discarded after one flight, and a partially reusable one, where the booster returns but the upper stage does not. Almost every 'reusable' rocket flying today is the partial kind.
